As the current pandemic has evolved, we have continually worked to meet the needs of our customers while keeping our team and all who visit us safe and healthy.
Underwoods has always followed a Food Safety program. In the months prior to the crisis, we strengthened our system in conjunction with Federal, State and County governments and implemented new Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.'s) to minimize health risks. We are committed to the health and safety of our employees and customers year-round and during this current pandemic.
Our team members begin their workday by washing their hands and frequently do so throughout the day. Nitrile gloves are worn when handling produce, stocking, and interacting with the public. They are frequently changed and replaced as team members move between different tasks. Team members are instructed to not touch items outside the task at hand and remove and replace as needed. All our equipment including crates, coolers, trucks, and knifes are sanitized and checks of water samples are taken four times per year.
Immediately after the Governor limited groups from congregating, we closed our Animal Centers, Pick Your Own areas, and cancelled all tours, birthday parties, Tomatomania event and our Springtime on the Farm. Due to the projections of the spread, we have also cancelled our upcoming Farm Camp.
Throughout the last 4 weeks, we have responded to the crisis with the following:
- Launching a Healthy Harvest box for pickup, limited contact pickup and delivery
- Floor Markings For Social Distancing
- Signage Regarding Social Distancing
- Discontinuing Contact of Reusable Bags
- Mandatory Face Masks by Team Members
- Plexiglass Partitions
- Signage Regarding No Touching of Product
- Added Space For More Social Distancing
- Team members dedicated to safety reminding guests to wear their masks & distance.
The safety of our team members and our customers is of the utmost importance and we will continuously work to do whatever we can to offer a clean, safe, healthy, positive experience for all. Thank you for trusting us with your produce needs. Please take care and stay healthy!
We have 3 large hand washing stations and smaller ones near our portable restrooms. There is hand washing station at the entrance/exit to the farm, near The Barnyard within the Animal Center and in the Tour/Birthday Party area. We also have portable hand washing sinks near our portable restrooms. Each hand washing station is equipped with soap, water and disposable paper towels. Hand washing signs are posted above the stations. We encourage guests and our team members to wash their hands and we also provide hand sanitizer at our Admission's booth, The Barnyard and Farm Market. Guests can also bring their own hand sanitizer.
Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy
You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:
- Before, during, and after preparing food
- Before eating food
- Before and after treating a cut or wound
- After using the toilet
- After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
- After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
- After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
- After handling pet food or pet treats
- After touching garbage

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way
Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.
Follow these five steps every time.
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
*This information provided by the CDC - Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can’t Use Soap and Water
Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. You can tell if the sanitizer contains at least 60% alcohol by looking at the product label.
Sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in many situations. However,
- Sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs.
- Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
- Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals from hands.
*This information provided by the CDC - Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
Caution! Swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause alcohol poisoning if more than a couple of mouthfuls are swallowed. Keep it out of reach of young children and supervise their use.
How to use hand sanitizer
- Apply the gel product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount).
- Rub your hands together.
- Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds.

We strongly recommend that any guests that are experiencing any symptoms including coughing, fever, shortness of breath, etc, remain at home.
We have always followed a Food Safety program. Over the last few months, we strengthened our system in conjunction with Federal and County governments and implemented new Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.'s) to minimize health risks. While we have always promoted hand washing via hand washing buttons our staff wears and directed our guests and employees to frequently use the hand washing stations at our entrances, exits, high traffic areas, and near our animals, additional educational signage has been posted and tips have been added to our website. All of our equipment including crates, coolers, trucks, and knifes are sanitized and checks of water samples are taken four times per year. As recommended, hand washing using soap and water, is the #1 best way to prevent the catching/spreading of viruses and bacteria.
Our team members routinely sanitize areas of the farm including countertops, gates, restrooms, and high-traffic contact zones. Hand sanitizer is available at our Farm Markets, admissions, and in the petting grooming area with hand-washing stations throughout the farm. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own hand-sanitizer and tissues. We strongly recommend that any guests that are experiencing any symptoms including coughing, fever, shortness of breath, etc, remain at home.
MSNBC medical contributor Dr. Joseph Fair, a virologist, epidemiologist and outbreak responder, stated on a March 6, 2020 segment of NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, that "nature's greatest disinfectant [is] sunlight. The UV light inactivates the virus." With over 30 acres to explore and visit, there is plenty of room for all to enjoy themselves in the fresh air & open space and take in the sunshine.

We like to call our restrooms "farm bathrooms". As we are a farm that is ever changing, we shy against putting in facilities that would require permanent changes to the farm. We do our best to provide "farm restrooms" that are clean and user friendly and we thank you for your understanding.
Our farm is wheelchair and handicap accessible. We have handicapped parking at the entrances. The pathways inside our animal center are of decomposed granite and we have handicapped bathrooms. The pick-your-own fields are dirt, but are manageable as visitors take strollers and wagons. We do have hay throughout the Fall Harvest site, but in terms of manageability, the matriarch of our family, Alice Underwood, visited the farm often in her wheelchair and walker well in to her 90's and never had an issue. Our team members are always on hand to assist in any way possible.
We recommend coming during the week. Weekends are more popular.

We do have hay throughout the Fall Harvest Festival site, but in terms of manageability, the matriarch of our family, Alice Underwood, visited the farm often in her wheelchair and walker well in to her 90's and never had an issue. Our team members are always on hand to assist in any way possible.

Dear Prospective Camper
I am very sad to say the we are canceling our summer farm camp for 2020. It pains me to do this since we enjoy having the children participating in farm activities. It is early to make this determination, but we are afraid that the pandemic will not be resolved by the time camp starts. We don’t want to bring children from a diverse area together in close contact until we feel secure that they won’t be exposed. If the situation changes dramatically in time enough that we can implement our program, we will consider reopening it, even for a shorter time.
My sincerest apology,
Craig Underwood
Dear Farm Friends-
Many of our LA customers messaged us with great concern that they would not be able to get fresh fruits and vegetables from us after Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced last night that he would be temporarily suspending Farmers’ Markets in LA.
Just to clarify, the mayor wrote in a tweet: “I’m announcing the temporary suspension of farmers markets pending City review of physical distancing plans needed to keep communities safe. We will review plans immediately so markets can stay open this week.” Please note that he stated:
This is good news!
Culver City Farmers’ Market has worked diligently to announce their safety protocols and will be open today from 2pm - 7pm. We are confident that the Farmers’ Market managers in Los Angeles will work to do the same in order to open as scheduled.
The Ventura County Farmers Markets we visit already have safety plans in place and they are all running as scheduled. Our team follows all health and safety guidelines of the markets as well as those of our Food Safety Programs. Detailed information can be found on this page.
In addition to us being at Farmers’ Markets, our Moorpark and Somis Farm Stores located in Ventura County are open daily 9am - 6pm & we are offering a Healthy Harvest box as well as our Harvest Gift baskets for pickup, Limited pickup & FedEx delivery. Visit https://underwoodfamilyfarms.com/shop/ for more info.

Dear Farm Friends-
Underwoods has always followed a Food Safety program. Over the last few months, we strengthened our system in conjunction with Federal, State and County governments and implemented new Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.'s) to minimize health risks.
Masks have been distributed to our team members and they are advised to wear them at all times. Masks are disinfected and/or changed out by the team members frequently. All our equipment including crates, coolers, trucks, and knifes are sanitized and checks of water samples are taken four times per year.
Our team routinely sanitizes areas of the farm including countertops, restrooms, carts, shopping baskets and high-traffic contact zones. Hand sanitizer is available at our Farm Markets and hand-washing stations are adjacent to the buildings. If you do not see it, please ask as we have had bottles stolen lately and must keep it behind the counter. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own hand-sanitizer, towels and tissues.
We direct our customers and team to frequently use the hand washing stations at our entrances, exits, & high traffic areas. Additional educational signage has been posted and tips have been added to our website. As recommended, hand washing using soap and water, is the #1 best way to prevent the catching/spreading of viruses and bacteria. We insist that any guests or team members that are experiencing any symptoms including coughing, fever, shortness of breath, etc, remain at home.
Our team follows the health and safety procedures listed above at the Farmers’ Markets we attend. Our booth layout has switched from a U-shape configuration with center aisle to either a wider, more spacious set-up or a linear layout to allow for social distancing. Each Farm Market has protocols set in place for their individual markets. Please check with each Farmers’ Markets to find out how they are managing their markets.
We have instructed our team to adhere to social distancing as best they are able. We ask that our visitors act responsibly and maintain the allotted social distancing set by the state while also being kind and courteous to other customers and our team members. We have also placed tape on the ground to instruct customers where to stand to allow for the 6" distancing while at checkout and we have altered our checkout structure to create more distance between our team member and customers. Our team members limit the number of customers inside the markets and we ask our customers be patient to allow others the time to do their shopping.
If customers choose to bring reusable bags, we encourage them to clean them after use, not place them on our countertops and they must load their own bags. We ask our customers not to handle the produce or products unless they are purchasing them. We have signage encouraging no additional touching however we ask our customers to be responsible for their own actions.
Our team is doing their best to accommodate all customers and provide healthy produce during the constantly changing environment while maintaining order and customer service. We encourage our customers to continuing eating healthy and we will work hard to follow our mission of bringing fresh fruit and vegetables from our farm to your table.
Please take care and stay healthy!

Underwoods will be open to guests and we plan to continue as scheduled with our upcoming Springtime on the Farm March 21 – April 13. We are continually following public health recommendations and monitoring the situation closely through the following sources:
As always, we are here via email at info@underwoodfamilyfarms.com, by phone at (805) 529-3690 or in person to answer any questions you have regarding your visit to the farm.
Please take care.
